The Riva (officially: Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda) is a waterfront boardwalk that is the cultural center of Split. Its current look was formed during the French reign over Split, as they were strengthening the waterside defenses and planting palm trees in place of fig trees that used to grow on the Riva.
The southern wall of Diocletian’s Palace runs alongside Riva, and you can access the palace directly from it through the Bronze gate of Diocletian’s palace, leading into the substructures. At the west end, you will find the Church and Convent of St. Francis, the Prokurative square, and a way into Marmont’s street.
The Riva is the main event center of Split; many major events, concerts, and political forums are held there, and the locals meet successful sportsmen there upon their arrival to Split. It’s a prime location for the locals to just chill out while drinking coffee and reminiscing with friends.
Another way to enjoy Split Riva without even visiting it is by admiring it from a distance. The first viewpoint to Marjan, as well as many other spots in Marjan Park, and nearby piers offer stunning views of the Riva and the area surrounding it; it’s equally as beautiful during the day as it is during the night.
