Prokurative

Prokurative, also known as Trg Republike in Split, is a Venetian-style square built in the mid-19th century. It got its name thanks to the arches on the neo-Renaissance buildings that surround it on three sides. It’s often used as a stage for cultural events such as concerts and music festivals. It’s located just west of Riva, and Marmontova Street also stretches alongside it.

The first part of Prokurative to be built was a theater on the north side, known as Teatro Bajamonti. The construction started in late 1859, but it sadly burned down in a fire. The west wing of the Prokurative was built in 1867, and the construction of the east wing was completed in 1928. The theater itself was also rebuilt in the meantime and is still active today as the City Youth Theatre Split (Gradsko kazalište mladih).

Only the south side of Prokurative is opened up, with a fountain in front of it, providing a great view towards the harbor and Church and Convent of St. Francis.
