The Church and Monastery of St. Francis were built on an old, early Christian site—the grave of St. Felix, a martyr from Diocletian’s time (304 AD). Franciscan friars arrived in the early 13th century and established the monastery. It is located on the western part of the Riva, next to the Prokurative.
Within the church, you’ll find a Gothic painting by Blaž Juraj and a sarcophagus depicting the crossing over the Red Sea. The monastery has a library with over 3,000 books. Both the church and the monastery have the tombs of prominent citizens of Split, such as Marko Marulić.
