Croatian National Theater in Split

The Croatian National Theatre in Split (Croatian: Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Splitu (HNK Split)) is a theater in Split; it’s one of the oldest theaters in Dalmatia that’s still in operation. The theater opened in 1893 and was, at the time, the biggest theater in Southeast Europe, with a capacity of 1000 viewers at a time when Split had around 16000 inhabitants.

In 1970, the theater building was heavily damaged, but it was repaired over the coming decade, so the theater reopened in 1980. The theater is located near the northern end of Marmont Street.

The Croatian National Theater in Split hosts over 300 performances each year with over 100,000 audience members as part of its regular program. Apart from the regular shows, the theater also hosts two annual festivals: the Split Summer Festival (Splitsko ljeto), which has been running since 1954, and Days of Marulić (Marulićevi dani), which has been running since 1991.
